How to safely use embossing powder with rubber stamps

Embossing is a popular design technique that has been used by designers worldwide since it’s introduction. For good reason too, as witnessed by the myriads of beautiful design results that have been created with the assistance of this technique. If you are thinking about making an embossed image with your rubber stamps, you can make use of embossing powder to do so.

Here’s how you can go about doing so:

The drawback of embossing powders is that they aren’t cheap. But this is reasonable if you consider the fact that embossing powders come in large varieties of saturation, colour and even glitter. Some embossing powders even have crystals mixed in or holographic effects mixed into them. The more elaborate the mix, the higher the price so you want to set a budget for it. For beginners, the clear embossing powder is a good and fair starting point.

Apart from the embossing powders, you will also need to invest in heating tools like a heat gun, as well as rubber stamps. Since it is recommended that you practice first before using the effect on the actual material, you are advised to prepare some scrap paper, as well as the stamps you no longer need to use as often so just in case there is damage, you wouldn’t have compromise the effect of your best rubber stamps.

Usual Steps

With your inked rubber stamp, choose the location on your material and stamp your image down. Once you have done so, you need to apply the embossing powder immediately, you can do so by gently tapping the side of the embossing powder container and applying the powder onto the stamped image. Make sure to do so before the ink of your rubber stamp dries- you want the powder to stay in place so pigment ink will work the best in this case. Catch any excess powder away with scrap paper and tap the back of your material to remove all excess. Once done, you will need to use your heating tool and apply heat to the area. You will be able to see visible changes appearing once the embossing powder begins melting.

Additional effects

If you are feeling particularly fancy, you can also try for a resist effect by painting over the embossed region with materials like watercolour. Or line the area with marker pen as well as use multicoloured stamp pads for different ink, you can even begin adding embellishments to the end results.

Always make sure to clean your rubber stamps after you have finished using them with a combination of other things. Certain material can clump in your rubber stamps and ruin the crispness of your stamped images- which is what we don’t want. Tap your rubber stamps lightly to get rid of the excess powder that may have been stuck to the indents and rinse under running water. Then leave to soak in water and soap for a while. Once you have cleaned every bit of powder off, leave your rubber stamp to dry fully before keeping it away to prevent chances of mold.
